Penalty points

What are penalty points?

  • Penalty points were introduced in 2002 to discourage drivers from committing driving offences
  • In 2006, fixed-charge fines were introduced as a further measure to punish unsafe driving
  • Penalty points are applied to your driving licence record
  • They apply on full licences, provisional licences, and even foreign driving licences
  • If you receive more than 12 points in any 3 year period, you will automatically face a six-month disqualification from driving
