Penalty points
What are penalty points?
- Penalty points were introduced in 2002 to discourage drivers from committing driving offences
- In 2006, fixed-charge fines were introduced as a further measure to punish unsafe driving
- Penalty points are applied to your driving licence record
- They apply on full licences, provisional licences, and even foreign driving licences
- If you receive more than 12 points in any 3 year period, you will automatically face a six-month disqualification from driving

How long will penalty points stay on my record?
Penalty points expire after three years.
Speeding
- 4 penalty points on conviction in court and a fine of up to €800
Not wearing a seatbelt
- 4 penalty points on conviction in court and a fine of up to €800
No insurance
- 5 penalty points and a fine of up to €2,500 and/or a possible term of imprisonment
Careless driving
- 5 penalty points and a fine of up to €1,500 and/or a possible term of imprisonment
Driving while using a mobile phone
- 2 penalty points and a fixed charge of €60
