Safer driving for life
Beyond the driving test
Beyond the driving test
Learning to drive doesn’t stop when you get your licence – many of us need to brush up on our skills and improve confidence on the road
We can offer lessons on
- Motorway driving
- Driving in darkness
- Driving in hazardous conditions
… or any other driving need you may wish to fulfil.
Tips for safer driving
Avoid fatigue
- If you feel tired or ill, don’t drive. Fatigue is a major cause of accidents
- If you’re facing a long journey, take regular breaks to stay alert
- If you are taking medication of any kind, ask your doctor whether it is safe to drive
Prepare your car for the road
Before you leave, make sure:
- You have good quality, properly inflated tyres
- You have a clean, demisted windscreen and effectively working wipers and your windscreen wash liquid bottle is topped up
- Your head restraint is properly positioned behind your head (not your neck) to prevent whiplash
Driving carefully
- Always drive with your dipped headlights on, no matter what the time of day so that you can be more easily seen by other road users. This is particularly important in poor weather
- Speed limits are not targets - keep to a safe speed that’s appropriate to driving conditions
- The ‘two second rule’ – leave two seconds’ worth of room between you and the car in front of you in good conditions. Double that time when driving in poor weather
- When parking, it’s usually safer to reverse into your parking spot
And lastly, never drive if you’ve been drinking or taking drugs, or get in a car with someone who is under the influence of either.
