Living room design ideas

We all spend most of our time in the living room, so it’s easy to see why it’s such an important space in the home. Looking to make an upgrade in 2024? Here are some sitting room ideas to make a statement this year.

Do your research

Before diving into a whole new style of living room decor, make sure you research your personal style first. Marette Cronin says: “Always establish your style before you buy anything new! There are a lot of different styles out there and if you’re not sure what yours is then go on to Pinterest. You will know very quickly what you don’t like, and what you do.  Sometimes you’ll find that you like more than one style and that’s okay. If they can complement each other or create a nice contrast, this will give you an eclectic finish.

Don’t be afraid to get moody

According to Brenda Sorensen of Aspect Interiors, a living room is the perfect space to embrace dark, moody colours. “The function of this room is more social than the bedroom so it can take colours that cause a certain level of stimulation. Dark colours are more intimate and can create a comfortable atmosphere. However, careful consideration of the light in the room is needed, as a dark colour can appear drab if not picked correctly – consider this when you’re thinking about living room paint ideas.

Storage solutions are especially important

Megan Arbuthnott of Canny Creative advises the importance of storage – especially in a crowded home. “Having a spot for each activity will help to keep the space clutter free and relaxing. For instance, if you’re sharing your living room with small children, having good toy storage where you can hide away the toys when the little ones are asleep will help to give you that much-needed downtime.

Luxurious colours are a great way to show your personality

Niamh McKenna of NMcK Design is letting us in on a key trend for 2024 – colour drenching. “I think we are going to see a lot of colour drenching (painting an entire room in one colour including the doors, ceiling, cabinetry, and woodwork) as people become braver with their interior choices. I also think silvery metals, in particular satin nickel, are going to make a big comeback.  As with bedrooms, I think we are going to see more minimalism and quiet luxury in living rooms and throughout the home as well.
