These optional covers are available with our car insurance for an extra premium. Please refer to your policy document and policy schedule. The policy document sets out the terms and conditions of cover. The policy schedule shows your cover and any extra benefits or amendments, which may apply.
Step-Back No-Claims Discount
What this means is that in the event of a single claim or one arising during any period of insurance, you may keep part of your no-claims discount. We will step it back or reduce your no-claims discount as follows:
- 50% to 20%
- 40% to 10%
Protected No-Claims Discount with Step-Back
This allows you to make up to two unlimited claims in a three-year period without losing your no-claims discount. We will not take account of claims for windscreen breakage or fire or theft for the purpose of this cover. For subsequent claims, step-back no-claims discount applies. To be eligible for a protected no-claims discount you must have a 50% no-claims discount.
Protected No-Claims Discount

Windscreen Cover (Third Party, Fire and Theft cover)
This cover is a standard benefit on our Comprehensive policy. If you have Third Party, Fire and Theft cover you can choose windscreen cover as an optional cover.
Under this cover, we will pay for accidental damage to your car windscreen or any other car window – except for the sunroof – and for the bodywork being scratched as a result of the breakage. If you use one of our aligned windscreen repairers (phone 1890 666 888 for our current list of aligned windscreen repairers) there is no limit applicable. If you use any other windscreen repairer a policy limit of €225 applies for any single event.
Policy Excess Option (where cover is Comprehensive only)
The policy excess is the amount we will ask you to contribute towards the cost of a claim. The standard Comprehensive policy excess is €300 and applies to claims for accidental damage only.
You can choose to increase or reduce this excess by agreeing to a reduced or increased premium.
The options available are shown below.
- Reduced excess - we will reduce your excess to €125 in return for an increase in your premium. The option to reduce your policy excess to €125 is only available if the policyholder holds a full EU driving licence.
- Increased excess – we will increase your excess to €600 in return for a premium discount.
JourneyWise Accident Cover
JourneyWise option provides cover in the event of accidental bodily injury to any person named on your policy schedule (who you have chosen to cover for this benefit). We will pay €26,000 in the event of death, loss of sight or loss of an arm or leg, and will pay €130 for each day spent as an inpatient in hospital, for up to 20 days. You are covered while getting into or out of a private car, or any train, bus, taxi, aircraft, boat, ship or hovercraft (as a fare-paying passenger).
With this cover you have access to a legal advice helpline you can use to get advice on any personal legal matter. The helpline advice is free and is strictly confidential between you and your legal advisor. Legal expenses cover also provides you with a legal advisor if you need to defend a motoring prosecution.
Finally, this optional benefit covers you for professional costs and expenses which may arise if you want to make a claim following a motor accident. You will have access to highly-qualified professionals who will be available to give you the best advice on making a claim.
