10 Indoor family boredom busters

Home boredom buster

Thinking of fun ways to keep the entire family busy and entertained during the nippier months, particularly in between seasons, can be a challenging and expensive task. Cold and wet weather can mean staying indoors much longer than you would like to. That’s why we’ve come up with 10 family boredom busters to keep the kids from feeling restless and the adults entertained.

1 Take a trip to the pool

Keep the whole family active, even if it’s raining, by taking a weekly trip to your local swimming pool or leisure centre. Most leisure centres host family swimming sessions or open swims where the entire family is welcome to splash around together. Swimming is also a great way to tire the kids out and to prevent them from getting restless.

2 Set up a home treasure hunt

Get the family together to take part in a home-based treasure hunt. If you enjoy being creative, this is the activity for you. Plant a series of clues in different locations around your home and allow the kids to solve them. If you have younger children, it might be a good idea to split into teams, allowing an older child or parent to assist.

3 Have a family bake-off

Get everyone in the kitchen for a family bake-off. Baking will keep even the most energetic kids entertained. Kids love working with dough, cutting shapes and decorating cookies and cakes. They’ll especially love getting to eat the finished goods afterwards! Why not have some fun and be creative.

4 Visit a gallery or a museum

Taking a trip to a nearby gallery or museum is a great way to introduce the kids to history and art. It’s an activity that’s both fun and educational. It’s always nice to go out to another indoor venue to prevent your family from feeling cooped up at home during the colder months.

5 Create your own home-cinema experience

For a little cozy fun, have everyone gather round for a screening of a family favourite. Make a bowl of microwave popcorn and have treats like cookies and milk or jelly and ice-cream at hand to create a fun home-cinema experience without the added expense of venturing out.

6 Take a trip to the bowling alley

Bowling is another great, family-friendly, fun activity for when you need to take a break from the outdoors. Why not get the family moving with a trip to your local bowling alley.

7 Hold a family games night

Beat the boredom with a fun-filled family games night. Classic board games are a great way to bring the family together. While we can’t guarantee that there won’t be a few friendly fights, we can guarantee an evening of indoor fun.

8 Have an indoor picnic

It may still be a little chilly to sit outdoors for a picnic, so, if you’re feeling imaginative an indoor picnic could be the perfect activity for you and your family. Set up an area, complete with a picnic blanket, plastic plates and cups and anything else you might take outdoors. An area near a window works best so the kids can see outside and let their imaginations run free.

9 Sing karaoke

Karaoke is a great way to get the whole family together. Allow the kids to be the stars by singing along to their favourite tracks. If you don’t have a karaoke machine, you can simply search for your favourite tracks online.

10 Get crafty

Keep boredom at bay with fun crafts. With just a few inexpensive craft supplies, your family can make personalised greeting cards, candle holders, decorations, jewellery and much more. Nurture creativity with fun, imaginative play.
