Policy Types & Coverage
What is the difference between Comprehensive and Third Party, Fire & Theft?
Comprehensive covers your own car as well as third-party damage. Third Party, Fire & Theft only covers damage you cause to others and fire or theft of your own vehicle.
Do you insure new or first-time drivers?
Yes. We offer policies for new and inexperienced drivers, with options to help reduce costs such as multi-car discounts and telematics.
Are windscreen repairs covered?
Yes. Windscreen repair and replacement is included in comprehensive cover and as an optional extra for Third Party, Fire and Theft cover.
Do you cover driving abroad?
Yes. Your policy provides third-party cover for driving in the EU and certain other countries. More information on this will be included in your policy documents.
What does 'excess' mean – and do I need one?
All our car insurance policies will include an 'excess'. This is a set amount you'll pay towards the value of any claim you make before we pay the rest. For example, if you take out a comprehensive policy, €300 will be the standard excess. But, for an extra cost, you do have the option to lower this to €125. Please refer to our policy booklet for the full details of when the excess will apply. You also have the option to increase your excess amount.
Am I covered for personal belongings?
You're covered up to the value of €500 for loss or damage to your personal belongings in any one single event – fire, accident or theft. Any payments made for personal belongings won't affect your No Claims Discount.
Can I claim for window and windscreen damage?
You're covered for damage to any windscreen or window (not including the sunroof or panoramic roof) if:
- You have a comprehensive car insurance policy and
- You use our windscreen partners for your repairs
- If you hold a Third Party, Fire and Theft policy, you can get glass cover as an optional extra for an additional premium. But please check your policy schedule for full details.
If you chose to use your own repairer, you need to inform our claims team on 1800 147 147 as there are limits on how much we pay.
Can I claim for lost or stolen keys?
We can pay for the cost of replacing:
- Door or boot locks
- Ignition steering locks
- Lock transmitters and central-locking interfaces
But, for us to do so, you'll have to prove that whoever may have your keys or transmitter is also likely to know where your car is parked. If you do claim for lost or stolen keys, we won't take off the excess and it won't affect your No Claims Discount.
What is not insured by my car insurance policy?
Depending on your level of cover, there may be some things you’re unable to claim for. This can include things such as non-standard modifications to your car that we haven't agreed to cover.
To find out what's covered and not covered under your policy please refer to your policy schedule, certificate of insurance and policy booklet as they set out the cover provided under your car insurance policy.
Can I get a courtesy car if my car needs to be repaired due to damage that results in a claim under my policy?
A courtesy car is only provided in the event of loss of or damage to your vehicle which results in a claim under your policy.
Do I get breakdown cover with Aviva?
Yes. All Aviva motor policies include 24/7 Breakdown Rescue across Ireland and the UK.
Discounts & Savings
Can I get a discount if I insure more than one vehicle?
Yes. We provide savings when you take out cover for multiple cars under the same household.
Can I get a discount on my quote?
You can. We offer a wide range of discounts that could reduce your quote. For example, if you have no claims within the last five years on a policy in your own name, you can get a 'No Claims Discount' of up to 50% off the price of your car insurance.
Is there any discount for a member of my household who wishes to take out a policy in their own name with Aviva?
The multi-car discount can be applied if there is more than one car in the same household insured through Aviva Direct. So, if you are an existing customer with Aviva Direct and someone in the same household takes out a second car insurance policy, our multi-car discount can be applied to the second policy, and to each additional policy, up to a maximum of five, provided each policyholder resides in the same household (same address).
Can I still get a multi-car discount if our renewal dates are different?
For two (or more) cars, you don't need both policies to have the same renewal date to get your multi-car discount. It'll be applied as soon as the renewal is due on your second policy.
Quotes and Pricing
How much is car insurance?
There’s no one-size-fits-all price when it comes to car insurance. Your quote is calculated based on the information you provide and depends on the details of your car such as the make and model of your vehicle as well as how many years claims free driving you have.
How do I get a quote online?
All you have to do to get your car insurance quote is follow our simple online journey. These include your name, date of birth, contact information, car details, driving experience and your preferred type of cover, to name a few. You'll have your quote in a matter of minutes.
Then, all that's left is to decide whether you're happy to proceed.
Claims & No Claims Discount
How do I make a claim?
The first step in the process is to provide us with some personal details – like your name and policy number. You'll then be able to tell us what happened in your own words, as well as what damage your vehicle suffered. It'll also be helpful to give us details of anyone else involved; – other drivers, passengers in any cars involved, or witnesses.
Your Personal Claims Handler will then get things moving. And we'll always let you know what happens next. To start your claim, please call our 24-hour helpline on 1800 147 147.
Read more about making a claim.
Will I lose my full no claims discount if I make a claim?
With our Step-back No Claims Discount, you keep part or all of your discount even after certain claims. This is an optional cover with an additional premium.
What is a no claims discount?
A no claims discount can provide you with a discount on the cost of your car insurance for every consecutive year you hold a policy, in your own name, without making a claim. You can avail of up to a 50% discount on an Aviva car insurance policy, if you are claims free for the last 5 years or more. This is the maximum no claims discount we offer.
Read more about no claims discount.
Can I get proof of my No Claims Discount?
As your policy comes to an end, your renewal invitation will contain proof of your No Claims Discount.
What if my car is written off?
If your car is beyond economic repair, our claims team will strive to arrange a settlement as quickly as possible, keeping you informed throughout.
Driving Abroad & Green Card
Can I take my car abroad?
With Aviva, you're covered automatically anywhere within the EU for up to 31 days. To find out more, please see page 2 of our MotorCare Policy Booklet.
Your policy booklet also contains details of restrictions – like the driving of other cars (Section 2 D) and Breakdown Rescue (Section 6).
How do I get a Green Card?
A Green Card is a certificate of car insurance that you might need when driving your car outside the EU or some other European countries.
To arrange please contact us on 1800 333 322.
Do I need a Green Card for the UK/Northern Ireland?
No. A deal between authorities in Ireland and the UK means you do not need a Green Card to drive in Northern Ireland or mainland UK. Your car insurance disc is your proof of insurance.
