Get up to €1,000 cover for replacing lost or stolen keys and locks, with no impact on your no claims discount, adding real value to your overall car policy benefits.

Everything you need to know about Telematics car insurance

  • What is telematics car insurance?

Aviva’s telematics car insurance is designed specifically for new, first-time and young drivers who are still building their experience on the road. With Aviva’s telematics (black box) technology, your driving habits such as speed, braking, and cornering are monitored, over time, to produce a driver score. This can support safer driving behaviours.

  • How does telematics car insurance work?

Once you’ve purchased your policy, Aviva installs a small device known as a “black box” that tracks your driving behaviour, such as speed, braking, and acceleration. The device attaches to your car’s battery and sends data for each journey that is used to monitor your driving behaviour.

  • How does the “black box” get installed

You'll receive an email with a link for you to schedule the installation of the Aviva telematics box at a time and location that works best for you. Once the device is fitted, you can review your driving score and driving data through MyAviva, giving you full visibility.

  • How does the “black box” calculate my driving score?

Your driving score is calculated based on factors such as speed, braking, acceleration, and cornering. A higher score reflects safer driving behaviours. However, a lower driving score reflects poor driving behaviours. You can access regular information on your driving behaviours through the MyAviva portal, helping you improve behind the wheel.

You can monitor your driver score on your MyAviva portal. The driver score is for information purposes only and is available through the MyAviva portal to assist drivers in improving their driving behaviours.

  • What data is collected and how is it used?

Below are some examples of data that is recorded by the Aviva telematics box:

1. Speed, how fast you drive 4. Roads, what type of road you drive
2. Braking, how harshly you brake 5. Locations, of your car via GPS coordinates
3. Cornering, how fast you turn a corner 6. Time, the date and time of your journey

This data allows Aviva to assess your driving behaviour. You will be able to view your driving data through our MyAviva portal. See our data privacy policy for full details of how Aviva collect, use, store, and protect personal data.

Telematics insurance FAQs

Who is eligible for telematics car insurance?

The insurance cover is ideal for first time drivers and young drivers who want affordable insurance and the opportunity to build safe driving habits. The telematics insurance cover is designed for drivers who are either on a learner permit or hold a full driving licence and have a zero No Claims Bonus (NCB). For provisional licence holders, the policy is available for vehicles with engine sizes up to 1.4 litres. Full licence holders may be eligible for vehicles with higher engine capacities.

Can I get car insurance as a learner driver?

Yes, learner drivers can get car insurance with Aviva. Telematics cover is specifically suitable for learners, new and young drivers, and first-time motorists starting their driving journey.

Does the black box help with claims?

We may use data from the Aviva telematics box to help determine the circumstances surrounding any claims. Use of the data from the Aviva telematics box can support a smoother claim process, but does not determine fault.

Can my policy be cancelled for unsafe driving?

Yes. If excessive speeding is detected by the telematics device, it can result in policy cancellation under Aviva’s terms and conditions of the policy.

What happens if the black box malfunctions?

Aviva will replace any defective telematics box at no additional cost and may contact you if an issue is detected requiring a service call.
