Day five of the Harrington family’s Great Aviva Road Trip was packed with colour, laughter, and new experiences in the heart of Donegal. Travelling in their Citroën C5 Aircross MHEV, with car insurance for their electric vehicle provided by Aviva, the family set off for a day that blended tranquil gardens, playful fun, and the thrill of the Atlantic waves.
Fairy Gardens, Sculptures, and Playtime in Oakfield Park
The morning began at Oakfield Park, a sprawling estate filled with winding paths, sculptures, fairy gardens, and hidden surprises at every turn. While crossing a small bridge, the family spotted a frog leaping into the bushes. It was a tiny but magical moment that added to the day’s charm.
The highlight for the children was the railway line. They climbed aboard a bright Thomas the Tank Engine-style train and joined other families for a 15‑minute journey that revealed just how expansive and beautiful the grounds are. Callum, in particular, was captivated, grinning from ear to ear as the train circled through the park.
The family also enjoyed Oakfield’s playground and Family Fun Day celebrations, which brought beloved characters like Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Lilo and Stitch to life. Face painting, playtime, and ice creams in the sunshine made the morning feel full of joy and discovery.
Catching Waves at Bundoran’s Tullan Strand
From the peaceful gardens of Oakfield, the road led south to Bundoran and the golden sands of Tullan Strand, where the family had a surf lesson with Bundoran Surf Co. Their instructor, Anthony, immediately put everyone at ease with his energy and encouragement.
Getting into wetsuits was an adventure in itself, and soon the Harringtons were practising the basics on the beach before heading into the surf. What began with nerves quickly turned into sheer exhilaration as each of them managed to stand on their boards. The water was surprisingly warm, and laughter echoed across the waves as their confidence grew with every attempt.
Anthony’s passion extended beyond surfing. He first guided the family into a nearby sea cave, sharing stories about the rugged coastline, before leading them to a fairy chair where they each made a wish. Later, as the sun began to set, he introduced them to the Irish junior surfing team, who were training in the waves below. Watching the surfers carve along the glowing horizon was a magical moment the Harringtons will never forget.

Returning to An Chúirt Hotel, the family was buzzing with excitement. From enchanted gardens to thrilling surf, Day 5 showed just how varied Donegal’s experiences can be. The Harringtons drifted off already dreaming about Day 6, which will take them to the scenic Moon River experience.
