Exploring Carrick-on-Shannon: Moon River Cruise and Riverside Adventures

Day 6 - The Great Aviva Road Trip

Day six of the Harrington family’s Great Aviva Road Trip took them from the wild landscapes of Donegal down to the scenic town of Carrick-on-Shannon in County Leitrim. Travelling in their Citroën C5 Aircross MHEV, with car insurance for their electric vehicle provided by Aviva, the family set off for a day of riverside adventure and relaxed exploration.

A Moon River Cruise on the River Shannon

On arrival in Carrick‑on‑Shannon, the family headed straight to the Moon River Cruise. Sunshine glistened on the water, making it the perfect day for a gentle journey along Ireland’s longest river. The cruise catered to families of all sizes, with plenty of seating, a bar on board, and snacks for the children.

Live entertainment added to the atmosphere, as a talented musician performed traditional Irish songs and shared stories about the town’s history and its reputation as a popular tourist destination. For about an hour, the Harringtons soaked up the scenery of the River Shannon, passing riverside cottages and lush green banks, and enjoying the unhurried pace of life on the water. The boat was well equipped too, with toilets and front and back decks offering clear views of the landscape.

Discovering the Charm of Carrick-on-Shannon

After disembarking, the family enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the town. Carrick‑on‑Shannon truly offers something for everyone, from quiet side streets to bustling squares filled with shops, cafés, and restaurants. Families, couples, and groups of friends mingled together, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. The Harringtons savoured the chance to explore at their own pace, appreciating the character and charm of the town before heading to their hotel.

Resting After a Day on the River

Later, the family checked into the Bush Hotel, where their room featured a double bed and two singles, perfectly suited to the four of them. The hotel’s warm welcome and attention to detail made it an ideal base to unwind after a day on the river and exploring the town. That evening, they enjoyed a peaceful walk before dinner, reflecting on both the highlights of the day and the road trip so far.

The Harringtons ended the day feeling relaxed and content, ready to continue their Great Aviva Road Trip tomorrow, which promises more Irish landscapes, family fun, and memorable experiences. Their Citroën C5 Aircross MHEV, covered by Aviva’s comprehensive car insurance, was all set for another day on the road as they prepared to visit the Glenview Folk Museum and Lough Key Forest & Activity Park.
