Discovering Irish Heritage and Outdoor Fun in Leitrim

The Great Aviva Road Trip – Day 7

Day seven of the Harrington family’s Great Aviva Road Trip took them deeper into County Leitrim, exploring local history and enjoying the great outdoors. Travelling in their Citroën C5 Aircross MHEV Plus Pack, with car insurance for an electric vehicle provided by Aviva, the family set off for a day packed with culture, adventure, and fresh air.

Immersed in History at the Glenview Folk Museum

The day began at the Glenview Folk Museum, where the Harringtons had planned only a short stop but ended up staying for more than two hours. The museum offered a fascinating look into Ireland’s past, with rooms showcasing everything from traditional kitchen and living room set‑ups to historical displays on the 1916 Rising, World War II, and everyday Irish life.

Callum and Zoe were especially intrigued by quirky collections, such as the thousands of egg cups and a wide variety of toys and household items from different generations. They loved spotting objects their grandparents might once have used, which made the exhibitions feel both fun and personal.

The adults particularly enjoyed the transport section, which displayed vintage cars, farming equipment, and even a restored fire engine. Their guide brought the exhibits to life with stories about how many of the items had been found, restored, and used over time.

Thanks to the hands‑on approach and the guide’s enthusiasm, the family left with more than just facts. They carried away stories and memories that made Ireland’s past feel vividly alive.

Outdoor Adventures at Lough Key Forest & Activity Park

After leaving Glenview, the family travelled to Lough Key Forest and Activity Park, which was buzzing with activity when they arrived. Families were cooking barbecues and enjoying picnics on the grass, others were out on the water swimming or boating, while Callum and Zoe dashed straight to the playground.

Inside the park, the Harringtons discovered a wide array of attractions. Their adventure began with a scenic forest trail, where QR codes provided fascinating details about the landscape and wildlife. The trail led to a viewing tower that offered sweeping views of Lough Key, which prompted plenty of laughter as Joseph bravely faced his fear of heights.

The family continued along the Tree Canopy Walk, a suspended wooden bridge winding its way high among the treetops. From this unique vantage point, they could look down into the forest beneath them and admire the beauty of the natural surroundings from an entirely new perspective.

The park offered plenty more to enjoy, including an ice‑cream shop, a café, basketball and tennis courts, and even an aerial adventure course. With so much choice, there was truly something for every member of the family.

Wrapping Up Day Seven

Evening fell, and the Harringtons returned to the Bush Hotel, tired but delighted after a day filled with learning, exploration, and outdoor fun. Their Citroën C5 Aircross MHEV Plus Pack, covered by Aviva’s comprehensive car insurance, was ready to take them on the road again. Tomorrow, the family is heading to Longford to explore the Maria Edgeworth Centre, promising even more stories, discoveries, and Irish charm.
