Day nine of the Harrington family’s Great Aviva Road Trip brought them to the picturesque town of Carlingford in County Louth, where history, adventure, and the beauty of the Irish coast came together. Travelling in their Citroën C5 Aircross MHEV Plus Pack, with car insurance for their electric vehicle provided by Aviva, the family was ready for another day full of memorable experiences.
Tasting Tradition at the Carlingford Oyster Company
The day began at the Carlingford Oyster Company, a family‑run farm with a proud history spanning three generations. The Harringtons were warmly welcomed by the owners, who shared stories of how the business had been passed down from father to son, and how the next generation hopes to continue the legacy.
Once the tide was low enough, their guide led the family onto the oyster farm to explain the cultivation process. They discovered how oyster seeds are placed in bags, gradually grown and graded by size, and then moved into purification before being sold. The farm produces over three million oysters each year, with Ireland exporting more than 20% of Europe’s supply.
Joseph and Zoe enjoyed a few oysters fresh from the farm. The visit gave the family a newfound appreciation for the skill and effort involved in producing one of Ireland’s most iconic delicacies.
Kayaking and Games at Carlingford Adventure Centre

In the afternoon, the Harringtons headed to the Carlingford Adventure Centre for an action‑packed kayaking session. Though more physically demanding than expected, the activity quickly became a highlight. Following their instructor across the water, the family paddled together before stopping at a floating trampoline, where Joseph and the children leapt in and performed a few playful tricks.

Their guide kept the excitement going with kayak‑based games, including a lively version of rock‑paper‑scissors where the “losers” had to kneel, stand, or jump into the water. The adventure ended with a scenic boat ride around the bay, during which the family learned more about the town’s history and admired the 815‑year‑old castle rising from the shoreline.
Relaxing in Style at Killeavy Castle Estate
After a day packed with activity, the family checked into Killeavy Castle Estate, a stunning modern retreat with cosy beds, pristine rooms, and a relaxing spa. They settled in for the evening, reflecting on a day filled with learning, adventure, and seafood delights.
The Harringtons will set off in their Citroën C5 Aircross MHEV Plus Pack, protected by Aviva’s comprehensive car insurance, ready for their next adventure. The following day will keep them in County Louth, where visits to Skypark and The Last Leprechauns of Ireland promise a final day filled with attractions before they return to Dublin to conclude their Great Aviva Road Trip.
