Protect your pet from loud sounds: Halloween safety tips

Keep your pets calm and safe this Halloween. Discover Aviva’s expert tips to protect pets from fireworks and loud noises.

Halloween is one of the most exciting nights of the year for humans, at least. Between fireworks, trick-or-treaters, and the general hustle and bustle, it’s a night full of colour and energy. But for our pets, all those sudden bangs, flashing lights, and unfamiliar noises can be frightening and confusing.

At Aviva, we know that our pets are part of the family, and keeping them safe is just as important as protecting your home or car. As you get your house ready for Halloween visitors, we’ve put together some simple steps you can take to protect your pets, and your peace of mind, from loud sounds and spooky surprises.

1. Prepare a safe haven indoors

Even the calmest pets can become anxious when fireworks go off. To help keep stress to a minimum, create a quiet, comfortable space where they can retreat when things get noisy, ideally a room in the centre of your home, away from windows and doors.

Add their favourite bed, blanket, or toy to make it feel familiar. Keeping a radio or TV on low volume can help drown out the outside sounds and create a sense of normality.

If you have to leave the house for a short while, make sure your pet has access to this safe space and that all windows and doors are closed and locked securely.

2. Keep calm and carry on

Pets are incredibly good at sensing how their owners feel. If you’re anxious about fireworks, they’ll notice. Try to stay calm and act as if nothing unusual is happening. Over-comforting them can sometimes reinforce the idea that there’s something to fear, so maintain a balanced, reassuring presence.

3. Keep pets away from escape routes

The constant ringing of doorbells and the sight of strangers in costumes can be unsettling. When startled, animals can bolt unexpectedly, through open doors, windows, or even gaps in fences. Make sure all escape routes are securely closed off, and remind family members to keep doors shut when greeting trick-or-treaters.

4. Tracking your pets safely

Ensure your pet is microchipped, and check that your contact details are up to date. This ensures that, should they manage to slip away in a panic, you can be reunited quickly.

For extra peace of mind, consider using a GPS tracker or location device on your pet’s collar. Many modern trackers connect to your smartphone, allowing you to monitor your pet’s whereabouts in real time. It’s a small investment that can make a huge difference if your furry friend takes flight.

5. Be mindful of decorations

Decorating your home for Halloween is great fun, but be sure it’s pet-friendly. Keep fairy lights and decorations with dangling strings or small parts out of reach.

Pumpkins with real candles can be a fire hazard, so always opt for battery-operated candles as the safest option for your home, your family, and your furry friends.

6. Plan for car trips

If you’re driving, perhaps to visit friends or collect family, remember that loud fireworks and music can startle pets even inside the car. If your pet must travel with you, make sure they’re safely secured in a carrier or harness, and keep windows closed to muffle sounds.

7. Speak to your vet about noise sensitivity

Some pets experience extreme anxiety from loud noises. If you’ve noticed your dog trembling, panting, or hiding for hours, speak to your vet. They can suggest calming aids, training techniques, or, in some cases, mild medication to help ease their distress.

8. Keep a close eye on sweet treats

Halloween sweets are a treat for us, but not for pets. Chocolate, raisins, and certain artificial sweeteners can be toxic to animals. Store all sweets well out of reach and dispose of wrappers carefully.

If you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t, contact your vet immediately.

9. Look after the whole home

While you’re protecting your pets from Halloween noise, it’s also worth keeping an eye on home safety in general. With more visitors than usual, accidents can happen.

Make sure smoke alarms are working, electrical cords aren’t overloaded, and decorations don’t block exits. It’s all part of keeping your home, and everyone in it, safe and sound.

With a little preparation, Halloween can be an enjoyable occasion for everyone, including your pets. By creating a calm environment, staying alert to potential hazards, and keeping your home secure, you can ensure your pets stay safe while you enjoy the season.
