- Nearly one in four (23%) say they would use a campervan for a music festival or event
- The cost of owning a campervan (38%), parking (32%) and the cost of hiring one (31%) are also among the most important factors when planning a campervan trip
- Almost one in four (23%) say arranging insurance, breakdown cover or maintenance is another important consideration when using a campervan
- One in six (16%) assume a campervan would be covered under a standard car insurance policy
As people plan late summer getaways and festival trips, two in five people (40%) say they would consider taking a campervan holiday in Ireland. This is according to new research from Aviva Insurance Ireland DAC (Aviva), which offers campervan insurance exclusively through Arachas.
The research, conducted among 750 adults nationwide, explored attitudes towards campervan travel. It found that nearly one in four people (23%) would consider using a campervan for a music festival or event, as people look for flexible travel and accommodation options ahead of festivals such as Electric Picnic.
For many festival goers, campervans can offer the convenience of combining transport and accommodation in one place.
Practical Considerations for Campervan Travel
The number of registered campervans on Irish roads currently stands at 27,835**, highlighting the growing popularity of campervan travel in Ireland.
Alongside this interest, the research highlights several practical factors people consider when planning a campervan trip.
The cost of owning a campervan was the biggest factor, cited by 38% of respondents. Parking a campervan (32%) and the cost of hiring one (31%) were also among the most important considerations.
Nearly one in four people (23%) said arranging insurance, breakdown cover or maintenance would be a key factor for them, while 22% said driving a campervan was something they would take into account.
While cost is a key consideration for many people, campervans can offer a way of combining transport and accommodation in a single trip. Understanding the practical considerations involved, such as insurance and breakdown cover, can help people decide whether a campervan is the right option for their trip.
Understanding Insurance Before You Travel
The research also suggests there may be some misunderstanding around insurance cover.
One in six people (16%) said they would assume a campervan is fully covered under a standard car insurance policy.
Whether hiring, borrowing or owning a campervan, it is important to understand what cover is in place before setting off. Taking a few minutes to check your insurance arrangements before travelling can help avoid unexpected surprises and provide peace of mind during your trip.
Top Tips for Campervan Users
Aviva advises anyone considering a campervan trip to:
- Check that your driving licence covers the campervan you plan to buy or hire, as some larger vehicles may require a different licence category.
- Check what insurance and breakdown cover is included if hiring a campervan and speak to your insurer or broker to make sure you have the right level of cover for your needs.
- Plan your route and parking locations in advance, especially when travelling to busy events or festivals.
- Carry out basic vehicle checks before travelling, including tyres, lights and battery condition.
- Keep breakdown assistance contact details easily accessible while travelling.
