Aviva Urges Homeowners and Businesses to Prepare for Storm Boelo Following Storm Austen

Practical storm safety advice for homeowners and businesses as Storm Boelo approaches Ireland

Aviva Insurance Ireland DAC urges homeowners and businesses to take precautions following Storm Austen and ahead of Storm Boelo

Following the heavy rain and strong winds brought by Storm Austen, Aviva Insurance Ireland DAC (Aviva) is encouraging home and business owners to take simple steps to help protect their properties from storm damage, with further unsettled weather as Storm Boelo approaches.

Even after the strongest winds have eased, wet ground and unsettled weather can continue to create hazards. Loose roof tiles, damaged gutters, blocked drains, wind-driven rain and power outages can result in damage that may only become visible hours or days later.

Storm-related damage may only become apparent over time. Strong winds can loosen roof coverings, damage guttering or move outdoor items, while heavy rain can lead to water getting into properties. Once it is safe to do so, a quick check of your property can help identify any problems and prevent further damage.

Gillian Devereux, Senior Loss Adjuster at Aviva Insurance Ireland DAC said:

How homeowners can reduce the risk of storm damage

Aviva is encouraging homeowners to stay alert while further unsettled weather Is expected and, once it is safe to do so, take simple steps to help prevent or limit damage to their homes:

  • Make sure drains and gutters are clear of leaves and other debris.
  • Check roof spaces, ceilings and external walls for signs of water getting in.
  • Secure outdoor items such as patio furniture, bins, ladders and ornaments to prevent them being lifted or thrown by high winds.
  • Check for any visible damage to roofs, gutters, windows and doors.

Advice for businesses during ongoing storm conditions

Once it is safe to do so, businesses are encouraged to:

  • Check flat roofs for standing water and debris.
  • Check the building exterior for damage to cladding, signage, gutters or roof edges.
  • Make sure any outdoor stock or equipment is secured.
  • Check windows and doors for signs of damage or water getting in

Gillian Devereux added: “If you discover damage, take photographs before carrying out any emergency repairs and contact your broker or insurer as soon as possible. Aviva home insurance customers can find details of our Home Emergency Assistance service on our website and in their policy documents.”
