Aviva now offers a new type of car insurance called telematics, or black box insurance. It’s designed to help first-time drivers get on the road. This new insurance option is a great choice for anyone looking for black box insurance, especially if you're new to driving or you’re an inexperienced driver.

About Telematics / black box car insurance

  • What is telematics car insurance?

A telematics car insurance policy, also known as black box insurance, uses a device to track your driving behaviour, such as speed, braking, and cornering. The small device is installed in your car and it monitors your driving and, over time, provides a driving score based on your behaviour. It’s a way for insurers to assess how safe a driver is.

  • How does telematics car insurance work?

Once you’ve purchased your policy, Aviva installs a small device that tracks your driving behaviour, such as speed, braking, and acceleration. The device attaches to your car’s battery and sends data for each journey that is used to assess your driving behaviour.

You'll receive an email with a link for you to schedule the installation of the telematics box at a time and location that works best for you. Once the device is fitted, you can review your driving score and driving data through MyAviva, giving you full visibility.

  • What does my driving score mean?

Your driving score is calculated based on factors such as speed, braking, acceleration, and cornering. A higher score reflects safer driving behaviours. However, the lower the driving score reflects poor driving behaviours. You can access regular information on your driving behaviours through the MyAviva portal, helping you improve behind the wheel.

You can monitor your driver score on your MyAviva portal. The driver score is for information purposes only and is available through the MyAviva portal to assist drivers in improving their driving behaviours.

  • What data is collected and how is it used?

The telematics device records your data in relation to:

1. Speed, how fast you drive 4. Roads, what type of road you drive
2. Braking, how harshly you brake 5. Locations, of your car via GPS coordinates
3. Cornering, how fast you turn a corner 6. Time, the date and time of your journey

This data allows Aviva to assess your driving behaviour. You will be able to view your driving data through our MyAviva portal. See our data privacy policy for full details of how Aviva collect, use, store, and protect personal data.

Telematics / Black Box insurance FAQs (New Customers)

Who are we quoting?

Our telematics car insurance policy is designed for drivers who are either on a provisional licence or hold a full driving licence and have a zero No Claims Bonus (NCB). For provisional licence holders, the policy is available for vehicles with engine sizes up to 1.4 litres. Full licence holders may be eligible for vehicles with higher engine capacities.

Who will install the box?

Axon and Hyde Park are the installation partners for Aviva in Ireland, with a network of trained installers nationwide. They have extensive experience fitting telematics devices. Once you schedule your installation appointment, installation of the telematics box is typically completed within 4 days.

Is there a restriction on how many kilometres (kms) I can drive?

With our Telematics policy, you have the freedom to drive as much as you like, there are no mileage limits or premium changes based on how many kilometres you drive. Instead of focusing on distance, we look at how you drive. By measuring things like speed, braking, and cornering, we provide a more personalised approach to assessing you’re driving behaviours.

Will the telematics box damage my car?

The telematics box is fitted by a professional installer and should not damage your car in any way. It also has no effect on the performance of your vehicle or its electrics.

Do you share my data with any third parties?

We only share your data with the company we use that provides the service, namely Axon. See our data privacy policy for full details of how Aviva collect, use, store, and protect personal data.

Can I opt out of telematics tracking after signing up?

If the telematics box is removed or disconnected your cover / policy will be cancelled.

What happens if I have an accident?

If you have been involved in an accident you must take all necessary steps to ensure your safety and report any incident to the appropriate emergency services. You must also notify Aviva as soon as practically possible after the accident. Your telematics data may be reviewed as part of the claims process. This can help clarify what happened but does not determine fault.

Existing Customers FAQ's

Where do I see my driving score?

You can view your driving score through MyAviva. MyAviva is your self-service portal to manage your policy and view your documents online.

How often is my driving data updated?

Your data is updated and emailed to you every 10 days. You need to drive over 50km for a report to be generated and you can monitor via MyAviva your self-service portal.

I think my driving score is incorrect. What should I do?

Your driving score is collected via your telematics device & is available to view anytime through your My Aviva portal, if you still have concerns after reviewing your score you can get in touch with our dedicated customer service to discuss on 1800 000 133.

My box has stopped working. Who do I contact?

You can call our dedicated customer service team on 1800 000 133. We will try and resolve the issue remotely, if we cannot do so we will send an engineer out to you to resolve the issue. Whilst the box is not working or until the issue is resolved no driving data will be collected and this will not affect your insurance coverage.

I have bought a new car and need to get my telematics box reinstalled. How do I do it?

Inform Aviva and we will notify the installer that a new telematics box needs to be installed in your new vehicle. You will receive a link to a booking portal where you can choose a convenient time and date for the installation. There's no need to remove your old box, as we will remotely deactivate it.

Can I switch from a telematics policy to a standard policy midterm?

You won’t be able to switch to a standard car insurance policy midterm. If you’d like to move to a standard policy, you’ll need to cancel your current Telematics policy and request a new quote. Just keep in mind that any new quote will be subject to our usual acceptance criteria, which may result in those drivers who do not have the right level of driving experience not being offered a quote. We offer Telematics policies in cases where a standard car insurance quote might not be available.

Can a named driver on my policy see their own driving data?

No, the driving data we collect and hold is in respect of the driving of the insured car. This will include the collection and holding of driving data if any other individual drives your car. However, this data is not distinguishable between any party driving the car. It is important that any named driver of your car is informed of this fact as any unsafe driving will impact your driving score.

What happens if my vehicle is stolen?

Your telematics box / device may help locate your vehicle. However, you need to report the theft to the Garda and Aviva immediately.
