One common misconception is that the greater the cost, the more effective the system. This is not necessarily the case. Also, there’s little point in a home security system that costs more than the items it’s protecting!
“A good system coupled with outdoor beams can be fitted for less than €1,000,” says Peter O’Connor, MD of Securigard Alarms. “While an app for the alarm and panic button notifications can be added for between €5 and €10 per month.”
According to Peter: “People think that if they have an alarm they will not be burgled. If an alarm activates, an intruder will rarely retreat, but instead will move through the home in a quicker fashion.”
“A typical alarm system simply detects a burglary and notifies a monitoring station or homeowner through an app,” he continues. “If homeowners add outdoor beams, then the burglar will retreat.”
“CCTV simply records the crime. It needs to be combined with an outdoor detection system with live external sirens to be effective. Intruders often wave at cameras, but if a siren activates, they will have to promptly leave the area. Footage from CCTV can never be used by the Gardai unless an intruder’s face is clearly visible.”
Simon adds that it’s a myth that home protection should cost the earth. “With advancements in technology, smart home security has become much more affordable and accessible,” he says.
Martin says: “A common misconception is that burglaries happen at night, when in fact the middle of the day is more common, particularly in modern housing estates where most people are at work and the environment is unwatched.”
Simon believes that “several [other] misconceptions exist”. He cites the myth of ‘it won’t happen to me’. “Many people assume burglaries only happen in specific neighbourhoods,” he says, “but burglars don’t discriminate, and crimes can occur anywhere.”
Simon has also heard people say that cameras alone are enough, which he disputes: “While cameras can deter, they need to be part of a wider security plan, including alarms, lighting, and locks,” he says.
