Frequently Asked Questions

What is home insurance?

Home Insurance is an insurance policy that provides financial protection against specified covered events or losses for your home and contents. Taking out a policy can safeguard you financially in the long run as it ensures you won’t have to pay out of pocket for property damage or damaged/stolen contents should an insured event occur.

What does home insurance cover?

Our home insurance protects you against loss or damage to your Buildings and/ or Contents. A summary of the key information can be found below:

Buildings

  • Loss or damage to the structure of your home (including garages and outbuildings) – cover for damage to the home caused by events such as fire, theft, storm, flood and subsidence.
  • Escape of water – cover for damage caused by water escaping from your plumbing or heating systems.
  • Breakage of glass – cover for the accidental breakage of ‘fixed glass’ e.g. windows, doors, and ceramic hobs.

Contents

  • Loss or damage to your contents (in your home, garages, outbuildings and gardens) – cover for damage to your belongings caused by events such as fire, theft, storm, flood and subsidence.
  • Escape of water – cover for damage caused by water escaping from plumbing or heating systems.
  • Contents in the open – cover for household items temporarily taken outside the home but within the garden.
  • Food in freezers – cover for the contents of your freezer in the event of the freezer breaking down.

Liability

  • Your liability to the public – provides members of the household with cover if you are legally liable for injuries to a member of the public or their property. There is no cover for injury to members of the household or their employees.
  • Liability as occupier of the premises – if members of the household are legally liable for injuries arising from the premises.
  • Liability to domestic employees – as the employer of a domestic employee such as a cleaner in the event of you being liable for a loss or injury.

How do I get a home insurance quote with Aviva?

It’s easy. Just enter your details online, choose the type of cover you need, and we’ll give you a personalised quote in minutes.

What is the difference between rebuild cost and market value?

The rebuild cost is what it would take to rebuild your home from scratch, including labour and materials. This is usually lower than the market value, which includes land and location. Insurance coverage/sums insured should always be based on the rebuild cost.

How can I reduce the cost of my home insurance premium?

You can save by increasing your excess, installing a monitored alarm, combining buildings and contents cover, and buying online to get a 20% discount.

What is home contents insurance?

Contents insurance covers the possessions inside your home, such as furniture, electronics, and personal belongings, against events like fire, theft, or water damage.

Does Aviva cover Airbnb or short-term letting?

Standard home insurance doesn’t cover short-term letting. If you rent out your property on Airbnb or similar platforms, you’ll need a specialist landlord or holiday-let policy.

How do I make a claim on my home insurance?

You can call our 24/7 helpline or submit your claim online. We’ll arrange emergency help if needed, keep you updated, and aim to resolve your claim as quickly as possible.

What optional covers can I add to my policy?

Optional covers can include taking out cover for specific items such as jewellery, cameras, watches, and bicycles. You can also benefit from cover for unspecified items up to a certain amount ranging from €5,000 to €15,000 or cover individual items for an amount that you specify. Other add-ons include garden cover, caravan cover and child-minding cover.

Do you offer a no-claims discount?

Yes, we offer up to five years No-claims Discount on a sliding scale, based on the number of years you have held a claim free home insurance policy in your own name. If you are a first time buyer or have had no previous insurance, we will give you an introductory no-claims discount of 25%.

Who do I call to make a claim?

Call 1800 147 147 from 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday, to talk to an experienced claims adviser or email us at propertyclaims@aviva.com. Have your policy number to hand when you call.

How do I make changes to my policy after it has started?

Contact our Customer Care Team on 1800 335 577 if you have taken your policy out through Aviva Direct

What is index linking and why has it been applied to my policy?

Index linking means your insurance amount / sum insured may automatically increase each year to keep up with inflation and rising building costs. This helps your cover stay more in line with what things actually cost over time.

However, it’s still important to make sure your original amount insured is accurate. If it started too low, index linking won’t be enough to fully protect you—but it will help your cover grow gradually to keep up with inflation.

What is under-insurance?

Under-insurance happens when the amount you’ve insured your buildings and/or contents for is less than the amount it would actually cost to rebuild your home or replace your contents. If you need to make a claim, this could mean you won’t get the amount necessary to fully rebuild or repair your home or replace your items.

To avoid under-insurance, it is essential that you regularly review your sums insured to make sure you are adequately covered. The sums insured can be adjusted at any time; you don’t have to wait until your policy renewal.
