We’re not sure about you, but we’re missing our morning coffee stop on the way to work. Of course, all our biggest concerns during the Covid-19 outbreak involve the welfare of our family, friends, and nation as a whole. But there’s been lots of day-to-day changes we’ve all had to adjust to, like the closure of restaurants and cafés.

You no longer need to go cold turkey from your favourite barista-made coffees however! We’ve got three delicious, easy-to-make coffee recipes you can try at home. You don’t need any fancy coffee beans, and zero barista training is required!

All these recipes can be made using any milk alternative of your choosing.

Dalonga/cloud coffee

2 teaspoons of instant coffee are added into a bowl

Serves 1

  • 2 tbsp instant coffee
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp boiling water
  • 400ml milk

Ice (optional)

  1. In a bowl, add the coffee, sugar and boiling water. Using a hand whisk or an electric mixer, whisk until the mix becomes thick and fluffy.
  2. This coffee can be served with hot or cold milk. For a hot coffee, add the milk in a heatproof jug and microwave for about 35-45 seconds. Pour it into your mug of choice and spoon the whipped coffee mixture on top.
  3. For the cold coffee, add a few ice cubes to a glass. Pour over the cold milk and spoon the whipped coffee mixture on top.
  4. Serve and stir before drinking.

Serves 2

  • 2 heaped tbsp ground coffee
  • 200ml boiling water
  • 300ml milk
  1. Place two heaped tablespoons of ground coffee in a French press and pour over the boiling water. Give the coffee a stir and leave it to brew for one minute before plunging.
  2. Once it has brewed, slowly plunge the coffee. Pour about 50ml of coffee into each mug. Wash the French press.
  3. Add the milk to a microwave-safe jug or put on the hob. Heat the milk in the microwave for 35-45 seconds, or until the milk is warmed on the hob (but not boiling hot). 
  4. Pour the warmed milk into the French press; push the plunger up and down quickly until the milk froths.
  5. Remove the plunger and give the milk a swirl before pouring. 
  6. Slowly pour the milk over the espresso in each mug and serve immediately.

Serves 1

  • 2 heaped tbsp ground coffee
  • 200ml boiling water

Ice

  • 1 tbsp vanilla syrup
  • 25-30ml cream
  1. Place two heaped tablespoons of ground coffee in a French press and pour over the boiling water. Give the coffee a stir and leave it to brew for one minute before plunging.
  2. Plunge the coffee and allow it to cool completely. 
  3. Place the ice into a tall glass. Pour the cold coffee over the ice. Stir in the vanilla syrup.
  4. Pour in the cream – depending on how strong or weak you like your coffee you can add as much cream as you like. Serve immediately.
