Comprehensive insurance vs third party, fire and theft

Choose cover that meets your needs

Levels of cover

There are two main types of car insurance cover; third party, fire and theft or comprehensive.

The kind of car insurance you choose will depend on what level of cover you want for your car, how much you want to pay for your insurance, how often you drive and the age and value of your car. We’re here to make your decision a little easier so we’ve laid out the differences and benefits of each.

What is comprehensive?

Comprehensive car insurance will protect you for everything covered under third party, fire and theft along with any windscreen or accidental damage.

What is third party, fire and theft?

Third party, fire and theft insurance will cover you if your car is damaged by theft or attempted theft, stolen, or damaged by fire. In the event of an accident, it will cover claims made against you by other people for personal injury or damage to their property.

What you get

Both levels of cover come with:

  • Great discounts that keep your costs down
  • Optional covers and extras so you can tailor your policy to suit your needs
  • Cover if you're driving in Northern Ireland, Great Britain, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands
  • And then there are the benefits

Which cover is right for you?

The difference between the two is simply the level of cover you get. Our handy comparison table lets you compare the features and benefits of our comprehensive and third party, fire and theft insurance so you know you're getting the policy that's right for you.
