Winter Getaways

Winter destinations

Whether it’s the sweltering sun or those gorgeous Christmas markets you’re after, there’s a winter getaway for you, just waiting to be discovered. With so many amazing cities and resorts to choose from, making a decision can be a tricky task. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of our favourite winter travel destinations, making planning your winter escape as easy as pie!

For that magical Christmas feeling...

The Christmas market in Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, has been voted the best in Europe for the past two years. A trip to this magical, romantic city is ideal for couples looking for a break. And the sub-zero temperatures don’t put a stop to any celebrations! Street food, mulled wine, singing and dancing are at the centre of attention during the Christmas period. And you can soak up the atmosphere by sampling traditional delicacies, seeing the city sites lit up at night and joining in the many events taking place in the city’s streets and squares.

Copenhagen is one city that was made for Christmas! And it certainly oozes ‘hygge’ at this gorgeous time of year. You can visit one of the many Christmas markets the city has to offer, catch a glimpse of the incredible Christmas displays and stroll along the frosty canals - all wrapped up! Tivoli Gardens are a must, even if you’re not a fan of rides. And don’t forget to sample some tasty traditional treats like sugar roasted almonds and gløgg (a traditional Danish drink that tastes a lot like mulled wine).

Digital Detox...

Digital Detox is a term which is becoming increasingly common with getaway seekers. If this sounds like you, why not immerse yourself in the remote and idyllic town of Aschau im Chiemgau, Germany? Nestled within snow topped hills and mountains, with panoramic views of Lake Chiemsee, the medieval Hohenaschau Castle and the rarefied wilderness, this will truly be a trip to remember.  This remote town will force you to go off-line, give it a try!

Somewhere new…

Tallin, the capital of Estonia is visually, a modern fairytale, it’s established itself in recent years as a go-to destination for those looking to go off the beaten track. A combination of new and old, it’s small enough to not feel overwhelming on a long weekend break. Try local delicacies, make sure to sample the local hot chocolate (any excuse!) in the old town, the best preserved Hanseatic town centre in the world.

For guaranteed winter sun...

There’s rarely a winter’s day when the temperature doesn’t reach 20 degrees in the Canary Islands. They’re located along the coast of Africa which guarantees glorious sunshine all year round. There are seven islands in total - Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. And it takes just four hours to fly to any of the Spanish isles from Ireland. There’s so much more to each of the islands than typical holiday resorts too. Fuerteventura is known best for its great stretches of golden sand dunes, amazing seafood and laid back vibe. While El Hierro and La Palma are home to two biosphere reserves, lush valleys and volcanic amphitheatres.

If you’d rather head somewhere that’s a little more off the beaten track, South East Asia could be for you. You’re guaranteed sun and the winter months are known to be the driest of the lot. You could venture to the incredibly exotic Vietnam, get lost in the fascinating history and culture of Cambodia or indulge in the breathtaking natural beauty in Laos.
