With Aviva, you also get a range of additional car insurance benefits, including windscreen cover, breakdown rescue cover, replacement lock cover, and towing charges. Third party, fire and theft car insurance with Aviva
Third Party, Fire and Theft car insurance is a flexible option that provides essential cover without the cost of a fully comprehensive policy. It ensures you're financially protected if your car is stolen or damaged by fire, while also covering any damage you may cause to other vehicles or property.
Choosing this policy with Aviva gives you added peace of mind, covering more than just the basics. Along with core protection, you also benefit from breakdown rescue cover, replacement lock cover, and fire brigade charges covered up to €1,000. Plus, you can enjoy added extras like personal belongings cover and legal expenses cover.
Open drive – optional cover
Open Drive Insurance gives multiple drivers the freedom to use your car without needing to be named individually on your policy. With Aviva, this covers drivers aged 25–70 who hold a full Irish/UK/EU driving licence, making it a convenient choice for some households and families.
This additional cover ensures that eligible drivers have the same level of cover as you, providing flexibility when someone else needs to get behind the wheel of your car.
Named driver experience
Named Driver Experience allows you to use your previous driving history as a named driver to lower the cost of your own car insurance. If you’ve been a named driver on a car insurance policy and haven’t been involved in an accident or had a claim made against you, you could be eligible for a discount of up to 50% when taking out a policy in your own name with Aviva.
This helps those drivers taking out car insurance for the first time to secure a lower premium while recognising and rewarding their safe driving history.
To qualify for a Named Driver Experience discount, you must have at least one full year of consecutive named driving experience. You also need to be currently listed as a named driver and have built up your experience in the Republic of Ireland on a private motor vehicle.

Compare car insurance and cover options
Optional cover allows you to enhance your car insurance policy with extra protection suited to your needs. These add-ons can help safeguard your no-claims discount, provide cover for windscreen damage, or add open driving cover. You can also adjust your policy excess for greater flexibility.
Choosing the right optional cover can help you avoid unexpected costs and tailor your policy to better match your insurance needs.
An additional premium applies for these optional covers, but they can offer valuable added cover depending on your needs and preferences. If you chose to increase your policy excess, you will benefit from an additional discount on your premium.

Protect Your No Claims Discount
Your No Claims Discount (NCD) is a great way to keep your car insurance premium as low as possible. At Aviva, we offer three options to help protect your NCD, even if you need to make a claim.
- Step-Back No Claims Discount reduces your discount rather than removing it entirely if you make a claim.
- Protected No Claims Discount allows up to two claims in three years without affecting your discount.
- Protected No Claims Discount with Step-Back combines both, offering added security by maintaining some level of discount even after multiple claims.
While NCD protection won’t stop your premium from rising due to other factors, it helps safeguard your discounts over the long-term.
Windscreen Cover
Windscreen cover is included as standard on Aviva’s comprehensive car insurance policy, offering peace of mind if your windscreen gets chipped, cracked, or shattered. If you have a Third Party, Fire and Theft policy, you can add this cover (for an additional cost) for extra protection.
With this option, Aviva covers accidental damage to your windscreen and other car windows excluding the sunroof as well as scratches to the bodywork caused by breakage. Repairs or replacements can often be arranged quickly and in many cases minor chips can be repaired without affecting your No Claims Discount.
For hassle-free service, you can use one of Aviva’s approved windscreen repairers with no upfront cost to you. If you choose a repairer outside the approved network, coverage is capped at €225 per claim. Adding windscreen cover can help you avoid extra out-of-pocket expenses.
Policy Excess Option
With Aviva, you can tailor your policy excess to suit your budget. Choosing a reduced excess means you’ll pay less upfront if you need to make a claim, with the option to lower it to €125 in exchange for a higher premium. Opting for a higher excess, so increasing the excess to €600 can reduce your overall premium, helping to keep your insurance costs down.
JourneyWise Accident Cover
With Aviva’s JourneyWise accident cover, you can add extra financial protection in case of accidental bodily injury while driving. If you or a named driver on your policy are injured in an accident, this cover provides a lump sum payment of €26,000 in the event of death, loss of sight or loss of one or more limbs, as well as up to €130 per day for up to 20 days if hospitalised.
This protection extends beyond your car as it also applies when you’re a fare-paying passenger on a train, bus, taxi, aircraft, boat, ship or hovercraft, ensuring peace of mind wherever your journey takes you.
